Shoeless Joe Jackson
Joseph Jefferson Jackson was born in Pickens County, South Carolina.
He was an American baseball player who played Major League Baseball early on in the 20th century.
He is well known for his performance on the field and for his involvement in the Black Sox Scandal.
There is evidence to date that casts doubt about his role in the fix of the World Series of 1919.
He played with three Major League teams in his career; The Philadelphia Athletics, The Cleveland Naps/Indians and The Chicago White Sox.
He had major accomplishments as a ball player, still holding the White Sox franchise record for triples in a season.
He currently holds the third highest batting average in history.
Jackson himself said that he got his nickname while playing in Anderson, South Carolina.
He had blisters from new cleats so he played without shoes.
A fan noticed and heckled "You shoeless son of a gun, you!" and the nickname "Shoeless Joe" stuck with him the rest of his life.
After his Major League career, he played and managed many minor league teams.
In 1933 he moved back to Greenville, South Carolina and opened a barbecue restaurant and the "Joe Jackson's Liquor Store" which he operated until his death in 1951.
