This is where the path that extends Cronan to Skunk Hollow
splits
Many of you
already know that the American River Conservancy (ARC) is working
with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to extend the trail from
Cronan to the Skunk Hollow Parking Lot at the Salmon Falls Bridge.
They have purchased most of the land with the excpetion of one
section. That section is over by Cronan and not in this area. They
are under contract for that last piece which they will complete in
December. They have worked together to lay out the trail which
follows the old roadway in parts but is new in others. BLM laid out
the trail and then came in with a bulldozer and cut trails where
necessary. Crews under the guidance of both agencies have been out
contouring the trail. The trail at this end will be finished when
they put in the bridge across Acorn Creek above the Skunk Hollow
Parking Lot. At this time there are two trails that connect to the
parking lot from the bull dozed part. This cache is at the point
where they meet. The two below pictures were taken while standing
on the cache.
Trial One starts at the point across from the
parking lot and is well cut and marked. This is the extension that
ARC uses when they take groups on preview hikes that they have used
as a fundraiser. Shortly after heading up you will see a No
Trespassing sign. I asked the ARC guide on the preview hike and he
said that both trials were laid out and cut by BLM, some of it
across what was formerly private property before this. I also asked
the BLM guy who supervised the work crews and he said all land on
this side of the project was either BLM or ARC and headed for BLM
so it shouldn't be a problem.
For those of you who might still be a little
skittish there is Trail Two. This trail is the one that the workers
on the South end of the trail take. The BLM guy takes his truck up
and around through the gate with all the equipment and all the
workers hike up. It is not as well marked and gets vague at times
but with a little common sense you should be able to make it
easily. The hardest part is finding the entrance. Start by taking
the trail down to Acorn Creek behind the bathrooms and head for the
Trailhead Two waypoint. The waypoint is right where you will cross
the creek and start uphill. When you come to the metal pole with a
pink ribbon turn left and then back up hill. When I was marking the
two Trail Two waypoints my Oregon was at its usually accuracy under
cover (45+ feet) so if someone with a GPS that does better under
cover would take a reading and note in your log I would appreciate
it. No problem at the cache as it was clear skies.
FTF is a decon container with a log in it so you have a ready made
cache. The decon container also has an unactivated TB tag which you
can keep for personal use or make it FTF when you place the new
cache.
