Geocache Description:

The three of us came out here to hide a cache a few weeks ago only to find ourselves gazumped by Seedy Stuart. So when we came to find his cache we moved ours and now it is good to go!

In the 1890s attempts were made to make Lake Illawarra a deep sea port. A jetty was to be built on the western shore of the lake to allow the export of coal from the Ocean View colliery. As part of this scheme, a channel was to be dredged through the entrance of Lake Illawarra to allow ocean-going boats to reach the lake jetty. The channel was to be four and a half miles long and 430 feet wide between the breakwaters at the lake entrance.

A railway line was built on Windang Island to carry rock cut from the south-western side of the Island through to the mainland side of the Island. This rock was used to build the breakwaters, the remains of which can be seen today. The project was abandoned in 1902 because of the problem of drifting sand blocking the lake entrance channel.

The remains of rails, bogey wheels and axels are still visible, either partially buried in the entrance, or on the Island.

Windand Island is a great place to come and enjoy the serenity and ocean views. Get away from the hustle and bustle of city life without having to travel too far. Bring a picnic lunch for the grass is beautiful, and wander around the rock shelves. Just time your walk right...

We came out here in the late evening. The atmosphere was amazing with spectacular coastal views as well as brilliant views of the sinking sun over Shellharbour. Just do not forget your camera like we did, phone photos never do any justice!

Be careful in your search, it is just out of sight in the bushes, remember that the plants want to keep growing without being squashed! Be warned, there are unfenced cliffs nearby to GZ!
