Geocache Description:

This is the track of the famous WARRNAMBOOL "GRAND ANNUAL"

The coastal city of Warrnambool has been a home for racing for over 160 years. Eight months after the newly arrived inhabitants created a village the first race meeting was held in September, 1847. The meeting took place on what is still known to locals as Jetty Flat, adjacent to Lake Pertobe and Lady Bay. The towns first race program comprised of three events, featuring the Town Plate of 20 sovereigns which was won by Pilot, owned by a Mr Lane.

The residents of Warrnambool continued to stage race meetings at Jetty Flat but in August 1855 a significant changed occured that would reshape local racing. The Government set aside 40 hectares of land as a racing and recreation reserve, the current racecourse as we know it today. Messrs George Bostock, Francis Tozer and Samuel McGregor were assigned as trustees of the reserve.

In March 1858 the first meeting took place on the new course. The inagural meeting included a steeplechase which was won by Mr Bostock's Rambler and riden by TE Powling. However, it wasn't until 1872 that the paddocks now known as Brierly and Granters were used and the current steeplechase course laid out.
On June 13, 1872 the first Grand Annual Steeplechase was held over the famous and unique course. Then known as the Warrnambool Handicap Steeplechase of 100 pounds, the race was won by Mr Ferguson's Prior, taking the honors in a field of 11.

The Grand Annual Steeplechase is the one race that has brought people from all parts of the globe to the South West of Victoria. The race covering 5,500 metres with 33 fences, is the longest thoroughbred race in the Country and has the most obstacles of any race in the world. Competitors endure a unique route throughout the running of the Grand Annual. Horse and rider tackle double fences, cross roads into adjacent paddocks and change direction before entering the course proper for the final run home.
To this very day all roads lead to the 'Bool' in the first week of May each year.
