This bridge spans the Otanabee River, part of the Trent-Severn Waterway. The Otanabee watershed stretches north almost to Algonquin Park and west to include Balsam Lake. The river is typically calm and placid, providing good fishing and spawing grounds for pickerel below the bridge.
However, the waters do not always remain tranquil. From January to late May they can become flooded and fast flowing as dams upstream are opened to allow melt waters to escape from upper lakes. At these times the water becomes high enough to cover the seats of the picnic tables seen in the park below the bridge. Flooding can also occur in mid-winter when ice forms below the bridge and impedes the water flow.
Roadside parking is possible but use caution as drivers often speed across the bridge. Take special care with children.
