This little cemetery is the resting place of William McBain, an early pioneer of Cavan Township. He served in the 37th Regiment Foot Soldiers and was granted land in 1818. According to this date, it is possible that he served in the War of 1812.
His was the earliest settlement in the area. To put it into context, it was two more years before Adam Scott, the first settler in Peterborough established his mill on Jackson Creek and it was several years before Peter Robinson supervised the settlement of emigrants that became the town of Peterborough.
This cemetery has seen no burials in over 100 years. It is considered abandoned but not closed and is maintained by the township. The headstones were gathered together and set into the current cairn in the mid 1900s. At that time the new plaque was added in memory of William McBain.
As always, please respect your surroundings and the memory of some of our earliest residents.
