Geocache Description:

Cedar Island is one of the more than 20 St. Lawrence Islands National Park properties in the St. Lawrence River between Kingston and Brockville. There is an Information Board by the east docks where you can find maps, island info, payment envelopes and a drop-box for mooring fees. Please visit www.pc.gc.ca/sli for more information and rates. Trade items are not permitted - this cache is about the trip and natural beauty of your surroundings.

The island, is located just across Deadman Bay from historic Fort Henry and is the home of the Cathcart Martello Tower, one of the four largest in Kingston out of a total of six towers built in the 1840s to protect Kingston's harbour and the entrance to the Rideau Canal.

When the St. Lawrence Islands National Park was established in 1904, there were a number of buildings located on the islands of local historical interest. The gazebos on Gordon Island, West Grenadier Island and at Mallorytown Landing were built as picnic shelters soon after the park was established and are among the oldest structures of their type in a Canadian National Park.

While I could find very little information on the Cedar Island gazebo, it still make for a great place to sit and enjoy the breeze on a hot afternoon while looking out towards Wolfe Island and its windmills.

As for any cache that is surrounded by water, caution and common sense are required. There are currents and heavy boat traffic in the summer and unpredictable ice conditions during the winter in this location.

Because of the very heavy boat traffic I recommend that you NOT swimming from the mainland. During the summer months you can rent a variety of sailing/paddling/rowing watercraft in downtown Kingston to get you there safely (Google boat or canoe rentals).

The cache is a black painted water bottle containing no swag as per Parks Canada policy.

Enjoy your stay and remember to leave nothing behind.

Congratulations on your FTF CanadianZombie and Binrat - and thanks for inviting me along on your adventure...

And a big Congratulations to "catandmatt" on their 1st ever geocache find!!!!
