This geocache allows you to see the
Windermere Creek from a unique location which many local people are
aware of but only hikers find it. After finding the cache you
can walk alongside the creek and enjoy this beautiful Crown Land
forest and enjoy the natural habitat. If you approach it from the
west, be sure to see the creek flowing out of a large culvert, down
to the Columbia River. Use caution when hiking over the
culvert.
Windermere Creek is a fifth order
tributary of the Columbia River which briefly widens into what is
called Lake Windermere. Windermere Creek is the largest tributary
to the lake and is recorded as a regionally important fish stream.
Below this cache, where the creek meets a road, it provides
spawning habitat for kokanee salmon (land-locked) as well as
rearing and spawning for bull eastern brook rainbow and westslope
cutthroat. At proper times, at the lower road there is a popular
bridge for locals and savvy visitors to observe the spawning. Watch
for wildlife, including bears, at certain times of year. If you
approach from (A) you might enjoy taking a few more minutes before
returning to your car and walking down the road north of the creek.
There is a nice trail right alongside the creek itself but not all
the way. It appears sporadically, making the hike more fun. Take
caution with slippery footing. Note that the Columbia river flows
north to Golden, then merges with the Kicking Horse River, then
works it’s way southwest to eventually empty on the northwest USA
coast. Due to normal highway littering, ACCESS (A) allows you to
take a bag with you and pick up considerable debris tossed by
motorists. This will be one of the big benefits of establishing
this cache and we locals thank you!
