This cache is in Salado Canyon, parallel to US 82, near High Rolls, NM. You will need water, sturdy shoes and at least about 40 minutes.
Stefanie placed this cache for her husband for their 9th anniversary. I have adopted it. This is geared for kids. Best age groups are babies that are still being carried and kids older than three or four. Sorry, but this is not stroller-friendly! Physical log must be signed in order to claim this cache.
If you go, please remember to take the following:
In the winter: water, sturdy shoes, sunglasses, and maybe a walking stick
In the summer: more water, sturdy shoes (absolutely no flip-flops!), sunglasses, sunscreen, maybe a walking stick and optional a towel, bathing suit and water-sandals.
You can park close to these coordinates: N32 57.459 W105 51.850
From parking at the above coords you should be able to reach the entrance to the "Salado Canyon Trail" in less than a minute.
The very first part of the trail is harder to walk than the rest. Once you reach the sign “Salado Canyon Trestle 0.36 miles" the trail gets a lot better. From that point on kids older than three or four should have no problems walking right up to the cache. Follow the trail to "Salado Canyon Trestle".
After the trail bends you will see an information sign about the plants in the area. Take some time to look over it and enjoy the view!
Following the trail you will come to a sign about the railroad. Immediately behind that sign to the right you can go down the steps for more information about the Salado Canyon Trestle and/or to go down to the creek. If it is warm enough you WILL want to put your toes in the water.
As always, use common sense and do not endanger yourself or others. Do not attempt to reach the cache from that side of the bridge!!!
There is only one cache container now. Please only put safe childrens toys in as trades. Thank you!
Take your time on the way back up, especially if you have (exercise induced) asthma (please take your inhaler) or another health issue.
The bare minimum you need from the parking area down to the cache and back up is about 30 minutes. Please plan enough time. There is a lot to look at and you might want to stay at the creek, so plan with up to 2 hours (or even longer if you like).
There are two different ways to get from US 82 to the parking area and then back on US 82. Double check your driving directions! Only use "Steep Hill Road" if you have a 4x4 vehicle, have good tire tread and do not care a lot about your paint job! Otherwise, or if in doubt, please drive through High Rolls. The parking area is also reachable if you ride your motorcycle, but please be aware of the twists and turns.
