The granite domes of Porongurup National Park rise high over the
plain 40 kilometres north of Albany. Twelve kilometres long and 670
metres at its highest point, the Porongurup Range is renowned for
its beauty. The granite from which the Porongurup Range is formed,
is more than 1,100 million years old, and has been exposed by slow
weathering of the softer rocks surrounding the range. Drive to the
end of Castle Rock Road where you will find a nice day use area
which provides parking, picnic tables, a gas bbq, toilets and the
start of the walk trail. The trail is a 3 km return walk and takes
you past the famous balancing rock and up to the top of Castle
Rock. I have placed the cache close to the base of the rock, just
before the final climb to the top, so that you don't have to make
the final scramble to the top if you don't want to. But why would
you not go to the summit and miss out on the magnicfent view,
seeing you are so close.
