Geocache Description:

Best place in Halifax to play pickup basketball

This is my favourite place to go play basketball in the City of Halifax.

Before Dalplex opened in 1982, players had to try as many as 5 gym sites before they could find an open place to play. Dalplex was the first gym with basketball courts to charge membership fees.

During the season, volleyball and basketball teams (each sport has a women's and a men's team) have priority for varsity competitions but have been responsible to run most of their varsity practices between 4p and 7:30p. After that the basketball courts are often open to members for pickup games. They also post their practice schedules on the Athletics website at (visit link) .

On Mondays through Fridays there is a Noon Hour pickup group that plays from 11:30a to 1:15pm or later. It is half court 4 on 4 with the first 2 teams split up by senior players to make the teams have an even chance to win. Game to 11, win by 2. 2 "homer" rules are clear to the foul line (extended) and a shot by one team that does not hit the rim can be immediately picked up by the defense and put in the hoop. If it hits the rim, defence has to take it out past the foul line before they can score. Ignore the 3 point line.

There are lots of pickup games also on weekend afternoons and evenings when the varsity teams do not have home competitions.
