This is in a very public area, so you will need to be extra cautious when retrieving. When the markets are in place, this may be harder to obtain without being spotted, so it is probably best to wait until there is nothing of note going on. If clear, this should be a relatively easy cache to find.
The current Epsom clock tower had it’s foundation stone laid in 1847, and was designed by James Butler and Henry Hodge, two London architects. On the spot prior to this was a weatherboard Watchhouse, which was used as a fire engine house and a temporary lock-up, until it was pulled down and its materials sold.
Initially the clock tower was to have four lions bearing shields made of Caen stone, but by the early 1900’s these had been replaced first by electric lanterns, and then by globe lights. The new fire engine was still kept at the base of the tower; in 1869 it was arranged that the bell at the top (a new addition, from the foundry of G.E. Mears) should be rung by a hammer as a fire alarm.
Since it’s construction, all public events usual involve the clock tower, and the large area where people can congregate around it. The market stalls are held on this spot every week in Epsom, and it is still one of the most lively areas of the Epsom community.
