Just off the towpath of the Peak Forest Canal between New Mills and Disley.
I thought it was about time I launched a few caches of my own, and as caches on the Peak Forest Canal are somewhat sporadic, my first few will hopefully fill some of the gaps.
The canal was authorised by a 1794 Act of Parliament to run from Dukinfield near Ashton-under-Lyne to Chapel Milton, a few miles east of Bugsworth. The Upper Level from Marple to Bugsworth was completed in 1796; it was decided that a tramway should be used for the last few miles through to Chapel Milton, beyond which a tramway was in any event to be used for the climb to the limestone quarries in Dove Holes. The Whaley Bridge branch of the canal was completed in 1800.
At Greens Hall Bridge No 27 you are about halfway along the Upper Level. The bridge carries Lower Greenshall Lane across the canal, though the section below the bridge, down through Burymewick Wood to Waterside Road is unsuitable for vehicular traffic. The lane is part of an old track dating back well over two hundred years and probably a lot longer - northwards you can follow it up to Castle Edge Road above New Mills, and south to Lane Ends at Higher Disley.
Best approached either from the A6, or along the towpath from either New Mills or Disley, the cache is a small micro, barely bigger than a nano, with logbook only, so bring a pen or pencil.
