Geocache Description:

It's that time again! SPRING FLING! This year we are returning to the beautiful Red Rock Canyon State Park, near Hinton, OK.

This year we have something very monumental to celebrate. On May 3, 2000, a man named Dave Ulmer hid a bucket of trinkets in the woods outside Portland, Oregon and announced its location in a posting made to the USENET newsgroup sci.geo.satellite-nav. This announcement is remarkable for laying out the essence of the hobby that is still in place today. It's all there. The container. The trinkets. The log book. The rule of take something, leave something, sign the logbook. Dave Ulmer invented geocaching in one fell swoop in that newsgroup posting.

Now here we are, 10 years later, and Geocaching is still going strong. If anything, it is even stronger. Here in Oklahoma, we have a very vibrant community that prospers with no formal officers, no bylaws, and no treasurer or minutes. We are just a great group of people who enjoy a somewhat geeky common interest.

Red Rock Canyon was once a stop on the famous California Road Trail. Now visitors can enjoy this beautiful western Oklahoma oasis without bringing the Conestoga wagon. Red Rock Canyon State Park is a great place to hike, climb, or GEOCACHE! Located in west central Oklahoma, the park and campsites are located down in the canyon among the canyon walls. In addition to RV and tent camping, the park offers picnic areas, nature trails, a small fishing pond, and playground equipment. The canyon walls are a favorite for rappelling and open exploration.

A map of the park (in PDF format) can be found here.
The Registration form (one required for each member of your group, including children) can be found here, and the form to reserve your meals is here.

Update: There are over 100 people preregistered as of 4/8/10.

I have been told that I have not posted enough information about the event. For this, I apologize. Those who know me know that I'm not a big "rules" person, but I know that some rules are necessary. So here goes...

Each participant may hide not more than 2 temporary caches. Each cache will need to contain enough identical stickers so that each cache finder will be able to put one on their sheet. A "codeword" will also be acceptable. Tickets toward the prize drawing will be given for each cache hidden, and for each cache found during the event. All caches will need to be hidden, and the submission sheet turned in, by 11AM Saturday morning. The hide and seek will begin at approximately 1PM Saturday, and last until 10AM Sunday morning. All geocaches will need to be brought to the pavilion before noon, so that everyone can vote on their favorite caches!

The GPS accuracy challenge is being graciously sponsored by TeamGatorOKC. The registration and nametags are being taken care of by EJ Photokeen.

The pavilion that we have been given the use of will be woefully small, so be sure to bring your own chairs. An extra table or three would be helpful, as well.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE bring a data cord for your own GPS in case we have any trouble hooking up your particular unit. Feel free to bring whatever laptop that you run GSAK with, so that we have no issues loading GPSrs.

If you still have any questions about this event, please post them as a note to the cache page, and a member of COG will respond right away.
