Rietavo Šv. arkangelo Mykolo bažnycia 1853 m. pradeta statyti kunigaikšcio Irenejaus Oginskio, dvaro rumu centrineje ašyje, nugriautos medines bažnycios vietoje.
1874 m. bažnycia buvo užbaigta ir konsekruota. Ji yra ankstyvojo istorizmo etapo statinys Lietuvoje. Bažnycia pastatyta prie centrines miestelio aikštes, formuoja jos plana bei erdve. Rietavo bažnycios planas - lotyniško kryžiaus formos, su placia presbiterija, kuri užbaigta trimis pusapskritemis apsidemis.
Bažnycios pastatas iliustruoja Lietuvoje reta sekima italu romanine architektura.

Rietavas St. Archangel Michael Church 1853 Duke was started to build by duke Irenejus Oginskis, in the place of demolished wooden church, in the centre of the Manor. In 1874, the church was completed and consecrated. It is a construction of early-stage historicism in Lithuania. The church was built in the central town square, and shapes its plan area. Rietavas church’s plan has a Latin cross shape, with a wide presbytery, which ends up with three semi-round apsises. Church building illustrates a rare Italian Romanesque architecture in Lithuania.
