An Old Coaching In - Harrogate Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

47_Pirate: Well the cache has run its course.
The pub is being shut soon for a number of weeks while it goes through a refit and a loss of identity.
After that, the cache will not be returning.
Thanks to all that found it over the time.
The container will be removed tonight (17th May).

It will turn up somewhere else around soon

Geocache Description:

Nano.
The cache is not located in any of the flower beds or on any of the chairs or bench's and you do not need to tamper with any stonework to retrieve this cache. However please remember that the cache is located on licensed premises.

You can park to within a foot of the cache but you will probably want to get out to get it. And while you are out, take a moment to refresh the parts.
I have set the cache to 24/7 but outside of business hours, please respect the neighbours.
So why have I set this cache, well this is the second pub I ever drank in (yes before I was 18) and although it is surrounded by modern elements, it is still an old coaching house that is not a block of flats or a wine bar. I have been in Harrogate all of my “drinking” life and this was the first pub that I was checked for id all those years ago. Worst part was that I was old enough at the time. Over the years I have worked, ate, drank, laughed, drank, watched telly, delivered to, drank, fell over, I think you get the idea, at this pub so this is a celebration to me of a building that I knew more about the interior of than I did of the outside world until I took up this fun sport. I will be placing more caches around the area that has significantly altered me over my life in the near future.
So a little history but not much.
THE NEW INN is an old coaching inn and the current building was built in the 1840’s to serve the coaches travelling from Leeds to Ripon and points north.
Records show that a license was granted to a building on this ground in the 1770’s, so it has seen more than its fair share of passing trade over the years.

The cache owner is usually around on a Thursday night if you are having trouble finding the cache. He is happy to help or chat. just watch out for the singers!
As there has been a building on this land for so long, an old established pub would be nothing without its ghost stories. A Roman centurion has allegedly been seen walking through the area but you do not see the bottom of his legs. So if anyone feels sensitive to this, then they may wish to sit in the seats, in the alcove under the stairs, while you refresh yourselves. I tried it one night when the pub was empty (yes I was sober), won’t be doing that again. Oh and if you are there when the karaoke is on, watch out for the copper kettle!
Whatever day you come, if it’s during opening hours, pop in and say hello, a friendly smile awaits you.
