Messerschmitt Factory Tour Multi-Cache

Vor grob 70 Jahren war hier ein Flugzeugwerk. Finde kleine und große Spuren aus dieser Zeit!

Roughly 70 years ago, a plane factory has been here. Find small and big traces of that time! (see English text on bottom)

Die Runde ist ca. 3 km lang und kann auf Straßen und Wegen zu Fuß oder mit dem Fahrrad gemacht werden. Zu Fuß brauchst Du ca. 1 Stunde.

The route is about 2 miles long and may be done by foot or bicycle on streets and paths. By foot, it takes about 1 hour.

Rumpfmontagehalle: [STAGE 1: N 49°01.260' E 012°03.538']

Die Tour beginnt am Ort der ehemaligen Rumpfmontage. Wichtig: Nähere Dich dem Startpunkt von Süden! Wie es scheint, wurde eine Maschine hier vergessen. Wo Du das große bunte Haus siehst, war die Flugzeugendmontage. Hügelabwärts hinter dem Gebäude (Vereinsheim) leicht rechts kannst Du einen Sportplatz erahnen...heute genutzt vom DJK...damals der Werkssportplatz von Messerschmitt.

Gehe zurück zur Straße und dann nach Osten. Wo auf der linken Seite das Versicherungsgebäude steht, wurden Flugzeugrümpfe und Tragflächen gebaut. Auf der rechten Straßenseite waren zwei Kantinen und eine der Fahrradhallen.

Vormontage: [STAGE 2: N 49°01.110' E 012°03.718']

Dann triffst Du auf die Dornierstraße und gehst rechts. Bei STAGE2 hältst Du kurz inne, blickst Richtung Norden auf den Bereich der ehemaligen Vormontage-Halle und beantwortest folgende Frage:

Hochbunker mit Flugabwehrkanone: [STAGE 3: N 49°01.124' E 012°03.542']

Hier legst Du wieder einen kurzen Stopp ein und blickst nördlich. Am Ort des Gebäudes vor Dir war eine Halle, die u.a. für die Wartung der Werksflugzeuge genutzt wurde. Nun drehst Du Dich um 180° und blickst südlich. Vor Dir siehst Du einen „modernen Kraftort“. Auf diesem Gelände stand ein Hochbunker mit Flugabwehrkanone.

Lager und Polsterei: [STAGE 4: N 49° 01.020 E 012° 03.465]

Kurz bevor Du bei STAGE 4 ankommst, gehst Du an einem kleinen Wäldchen zu Deiner Linken vorbei. Wenn Du den Boden hinter dem Zaun genau anschaust, erkennst Du noch die Konturen der Polsterei mit Lager. Angekommen beim Wegpunkt siehst Du hinter dem Zaun einen größeren Betonklotz – nicht mehr ganz in Originalposition. Und wieder darfst Du eine wichtige Frage beantworten:

Verwaltungsgebäude: [STAGE 5: N 49°00.862' E 012°03.415']

Du stehst vor dem Beruflichen Schulzentrum. Das Gebäude hat 1943-45 mehrere Bombentreffer erhalten, ist aber ansonsten sozusagen im „Originalzustand“. Auf dem Dach war eine Flugabwehrkanone. Vor der Gedenktafel darfst Du dem dortigen Aufruf gerne folgen. Ein Gedenken an alle Anderen, die unter Kriegen litten oder leiden, ist genauso angebracht. Wenn Du bereit bist, wartet hier die nächste Frage auf Dich.

Schießstand für Bordwaffen: [STAGE 6: N 49° 01.197 E 012° 03.300]

Von STAGE 5 gehe nun weg vom Schulgebäude Richtung Prüfeninger Straße (Süden) und dann rechts – danach gleich wieder rechts in die Charles-Lindbergh-Straße. Da, wo keine Autos weiterfahren können, endet die Charles-Lindbergh-Straße und beginnt die Dr.-Leo-Ritter-Straße. Wenige Meter weiter beginnt eine moderne Wohnanlage mit künstlichem Gewässer im Innenhof. Suche Dir links einen Weg zwischen diesen Gebäuden durch. Auf der anderen Seite angekommen stehst Du neben der Trasse der ehemaligen Werksbahn. Bei STAGE 6 angekommen siehst Du in westlicher Richtung ein flaches Gebäude mit mehreren Giebeln/Dächern. Dahinter ist ein mit Bäumen bewachsener Hügel, der zum offenen Schießstand für Bordwaffen gehörte. Nördlich von hier steht auf dem Industriegelände das zweite noch erhaltene Gebäude....und noch weiter nördlich war der Werksflugplatz (heute Donaupark).

Den Final findest Du bei N 49° 01.(E*10-B*5) E 12° 03.(D/2)(C)(F+A+2)

Während Du die kleine Runde absolviert hast, warst Du ausschließlich auf dem Gelände der ehemaligen Messerschmitt GmbH. Das Werksgelände war grob von Dornierstraße im Osten, Rennplatz im Westen, Prüfeninger Straße im Süden und Donau im Norden begrenzt. Das Unternehmen hat hier und im Zweigwerk Obertraubling zeitweise über 12.000 (!) Personen beschäftigt. Darunter waren auch zwangsverpflichtete Fremdarbeiter und Kriegsgefangene. Nach dem ersten Bombenangriff am 17. August 1943 begann Messerschmitt mit einer Dezentralisierungsstrategie, wobei die Fertigung auf verschiedenste Zweigwerke und neu errichtete Waldwerke verlegt wurde. Ebenso wurden Flugzeugteile in Konzentrationslagern gefertigt. Außer den Orten, die Du heute besucht hast, gab es auf dem Gelände noch viele Einrichtungen, z.B. Quartiere für die Fremdarbeiter (an der Prüfeninger Straße neben dem Krankenhaus), Lehrlingswerkstatt und Berufsschule (Gelände des jetzigen Pater-Rupert-Mayer-Zentrums), Bürobaracken für Fremdfirmen und Zulieferbetriebe (jenseits der Prüfeninger Straße), ein Schwimmbad (Weinmannstraße) und eine Bibliothek (Charles-Lindbergh-Straße). Während noch viele ehemalige Messerschmitt-Mitarbeiter am Leben sind, ist die Geschichte dieser Gegend bei vielen Regensburgern nicht sehr präsent. Hoffentlich konnte dieser Cache ein bisschen das Bewusstsein für die nahe Vergangenheit erweitern.

Hull Assembly Hall: [STAGE 1: N 49°01.260' E 012°03.538']

The tour is starting at the location of the former hull assembly hall. Important: Approach the starting coordinates from the South! As it seems, one plane has been left here. The colorful house close by marks the location of the plane final assembly hall. Looking downhill behind the building slightly to the right you can guess the location of Messerschmitt's sports field ...used today by a German youth organization called DJK.

Go back to the street and then towards the East. At the location of the big insurance building on the left side aircraft hulls and wings were pre-assembled. On the right side of the road have been two canteens and one of the “parking garages” for bicycles (now...would you find an American word for that?).

Pre-Assembly Hall: [STAGE 2: N 49°01.110' E 012°03.718']

Then you meet Dornierstraße and turn right. At STAGE 2 you pause briefly and look towards the North towards the area of the former pre-assembly hall and answer the following question:

High-Rise Air-raid Shelter with Anti-Aircraft Cannon: [STAGE 3: N 49°01.124' E 012°03.542']

(this could have been translated also as “hochbunker with flak”...but then, only a few of us would have understood)

Here you pause again briefly and look northward. In front of you there used to be a building that was used for maintenance of the company's own fleet of planes. Now you make a 180° turn and look towards the South. In front of you there is a “modern power-place”. On this site there used to be a high-rise air-raid shelter with anti-aircraft cannon.

Storage and Upholstery: [STAGE 4: N 49° 01.020 E 012° 03.465]

Shortly before you reachSTAGE 4, you are passing a small wooded area on your left. If you have a close look to the ground behind the fence, you'll be able to see the contours of the storage and upholstery building. Arrived at the waypoint, you see a bigger concrete block – not exactly in its original position. And again you may answer another important question

Administration Building: : [STAGE 5: N 49°00.862' E 012°03.415']

Now you are standing in front of the occupational public school. The building has taken some bomb hits from 1943-45 but is in almost “original state” otherwise. There used to be an anti-aircraft cannon on the roof. In front of the commemorative plaque you may follow its request. Remembrance to all others who suffered or suffer from wars is also appropriate. If you are ready, your next question is waiting for you.

Shooting Range for Aircraft Guns: [STAGE 6: N 49° 01.197 E 012° 03.300]

From STAGE 5 now move away from the school building towards the Prüfeninger Straße (South) and the turn right – after that again right into the Charles-Lindbergh-Straße. The point where no cars can drive through marks the end of Charles-Lindbergh-Straße and the beginning of Dr.-Leo-Ritter-Straße. Few meters ahead you find a modern housing area with an artificial lake at the inner courtyard. Look for a way left through between these buildings. Arrived at the other side, you stand beside the former works railway.

Having arrived at STAGE 6 you'll see a flat building in the western direction with more than one gables/pediments. Behind it there is a hill with trees that belonged to the shooting range for aircraft guns. North from here on the industrial compound is the second of the preserved buildings...and even further north there used to be the works airfield (now Donaupark – a public recreational park).

While you have walked this small round you have never left the site of former Messerschmitt GmbH. The compound was cornered by Dornierstraße in the East, the baronial racecourse in the West, Prüfeninger Straße in the South and Danube River in the North. The company employed here and in the affiliated branch operation in Obertraubling over 12.000 (!) people at times. Among them were conscripted foreign workers and prisoners of war. After the first bomb raid on August 17, 1943, Messerschmitt started a strategy of decentralizing, where the manufacturing was spread to various branch workshops and newly built forest operations. Also, aircraft parts have been made in concentration camps. Besides the places you have visited today, there have been numerous facilities on the site, for example foreign workers' quarters (next to Prüfeninger Straße and hospital), apprentice workshop and occupational school (current site of Pater-Rupert-Mayer-Zentrum), office barracks for foreign companies and suppliers (on the other side of Prüfeninger Straße), a swimming pool (Weinmannstraße and a library (Charles-Lindbergh-Straße). While still many former Messerschmitt-employees are alive, the history of this area is not very present with many people in Regensburg. Hopefully this cache could expand the awareness for the recent history a bit.
