*Travel Theme* In honor of all the people and commerce that passed through this once thriving city. I would like to keep a travel theme going in remembrance of all the travelers this town once hosted. Park and Grab cache in the historic city of Stillmore. Watch for Muggles. Busy area when the local high school (about a half mile down the road) lets out. Happy Caching.
Cache is stocked with Travel Bugs and bumper stickers! I hope this cache can take the place of the once famous Stillmore Hotel.
The city of Stillmore. This small town (and also the town I call home) was once much larger than the current county seat and was home to a thriving timber industry. During it's heyday Stillmore had as many as 27 trains a day passing through the center of town. There's a good chance that one of the roads you drove in on follow a former train route. The town housed a military academy, an ice house, a local theatre, the then luxurious Stillmore Hotel and plenty of other amenities as well.
Once the timber dried up, the town began to do the same. The timber industry was then replaced by the bootlegging business. Stillmore was home to some of the hottest stills and fastest cars in the county. That too has come and gone. Now to see a still you have to stop by the local museum.
Currently Stillmore has a population of around 700 people. The biggest industry in the area is poultry followed by pines. However, Stillmore is slowly gaining a new population as artists move in to repopulate the town. Once a year, the StillmoreRoots Aritst Collective hosts the Annual Art in the Woods Exhibition just a few miles from this cache. Maybe I'll catch you at the next Art in the Woods.
While in town, be sure to check out the Stillmore Museum to get a better understanding of the towns history.
While finding the cache you may catch me in the pecan orchard picking up pecans or out in the studio working on some art.
