Geocache Description:

Franklin Village is a small township approximately 8km south of Launceston - these days it is almost an outer suburb. In days gone by it was on the main highway between Launceston and Hobart and was originally known as Long Meadows. It was also referred to as part of the Patterson Plains district.

Franklin House is a restored fine late Georgian house built by a gang of convicts in 1838 for Britton Jones, a former convict who became an early Launceston brewer and innkeeper. The house is notable for its rich use of imported Australian Red Cedar and was extended to accommodate one of the colonies leading private schools, Mr Keeler Hawke's Classical & Commercial School for Boys, which operated there from 1842 to 1866. The house finally became the birthplace of the National Trust in Tasmania in 1960.

The tearooms are open during business hours for light meals and refreshments and a small fee is charged to view the house.

Spend some time here to relax and absorb the history. Wander through the house and don't forget to check out the stables and gardens.
