The Presidency of James Monroe was known as the “Era of
Good Feelings” because - for a brief period - the United
States only had one national political party. Monroe was so
optimistic that he once quipped "Our system will soon attain the
highest degree of perfection of which human institutions are
capable.” When he ran for re-election in 1820, he won all but
one electoral vote. The sole holdout wanted to preserve the legacy
of George Washington as the only unanimously elected President.
