Sink hole on the North side of the Carmel Mountains
The cache is located near "Huta Jean" (pronounced like the Levi's.) This is Arabic for Demon Sink hole.
A sinkhole is a Karst formation - it is hole formed by the natural erosion of the limestone underground - similar to the phenomenon of limestone caves.
This sink hole is too narrow to go down - so don't try. The Arabic name may come from steam that seemed to come out of the sink hole and thus seemed like the breath of a demon below.
The cache is in a white vitamin container. Contains small log book, small pencil and some small prizes. Please return to same location.
The cache rating is based on the hike up from Kibbutz Yagur. You can probably park at the top of the Carmel and catch the blue trail - which is along the Israel Cross trail (blue,orange,white trail marker) in which case the cache rating would be much easier.
The Hike up the South side of the Carmel Mountains:
This is a 4-5 hour loop trail beginning at Kibbutz Yagur.
You will climb up 400 m, but the trail is not steep - it is a gradual climb through a beautiful, shady oak forest. Use the Carmel trail map.
For this hike, park at the "Baligan" parking lot, a children's amusement park next to the kibbutz.
Take the Green trail from Kibbutz Yagur - which can be found after the Horse Riding School. The Green Trail will take you about 1/3 of the way up the Mountain. Then catch the black trail that will take you over the rocky outcrop. Finally you wil catch the blue trail - take It East.
The blue trail, which is part of the Israel Cross Trail (blue,orange,white) will take you to the cache site and you can continue down the blue trail back to Kibbutz Yagur.
The area near the Sinkhole is a nice spot for a lunch break while hiking.
As always, take water, hat and sun block.
