Continuing the tradition started by a famous local geocacher, a cache at a historic marker -- but this one is a physical cache, not a virtual. The log book must be signed or online posts will be deleted
The Old Stage Road, one of Alachua County's original highways, passed near this spot. Dating from the 1820s, it connected the county's two major towns, Newmansville and Micanopy. The road served as a major commerce, transportation and military artery. Forts built for protection from Seminole Indians near Micanopy and Newmansville were linked by this road. During the Second Seminole War of 1835 to 1842, Fort Clarke, a US Army post, was build along the road northwest of here. Original sections of the old stage road still exist in Alachua County.
Replaced July 26 2012. Cache is a 8 x 5 x 2 inch lock and lock container with various kid-friendly trade items, a pad and pen. Good parking just off the road in a sheltered area behind a patch of trees.
