Chemistry 101: Common Names is a series of traditional caches all located within a few yards of a good place to park off of the main road and away from traffic. These caches are all pretty kid-friendly with appropriate supervision. During the summer there may be a bit of bush-whacking involved for several of the caches and of course watch for thorns, ants, sandspurs, spiders, and snakes.

As with all puzzle caches, the trick to locating each cache is to answer the puzzle correctly and get the clue that will lead you to the right coordinates. In this case, I am giving you the common name for a chemical along with some interesting information about that chemical. Using that information, choose the correct scientific name from the three answer choices provided and then substitute the 5-digit number following the correct answer for the “39.000” of the North coordinate. You do not need to be a science geek to answer these questions (although it might help). Hint: All of the answers can be found in a regular dictionary or on-line at (visit link) The larger caches have been stuffed with goodies including geocoins and TBs. For the micros, please be sure to bring your own pencil. Have fun!

Common Name: LYE

This compound was original derived by leaching the ashes of hardwoods. Lye is used to cure many types of food such as green olives, hominy, century eggs, pretzels, Chinese rice dumplings, and Chinese noodles. Interestingly enough, lye is also commonly used as a drain opener and an oven cleaner. Probably the most widely known use for lye is in the soap-making process known as saponification.

This cache is located near an abandoned house (NOT in it). Do not enter the house. It does not appear to be safe. There are broken floorboards and the roof supports are crumbling. Please supervise children closely.
