Snags - Dead Limbs - Or Logs??? But, that's my home!

Although dead wood in a forest might seem unsightly, it plays an important role. It might be in the form of snags, dead limbs or logs, but they play an important role in the lives of animals who live in the forest. It provides nutrients to many animal species. It provides habitat to numerous animal species and plays an important role in nutrient cycling.

Logs provide ecological functions as well. Decaying logs provide moisture and nutrients that aid in new plant growth. Young trees may sprout from a single downed limb known as a nurse log. The soft wood tissue of a nurse log offers an ideal substrate for many young trees during their initial growth and development. Logs also store energy and fix nitrogen. Furthermore, dead wood serves as a ground cover, lessening soil erosion and preventing animals such as deer from over browsing seedlings.

Retaining a variety of type and sizes of downed wood is good strategy to establish habitat for wildlife. If we recognize the natural value of snags, dead limbs and logs, they become more appealing to the human eye.

Jimmie Davis State Park, near Chatham, Louisiana has an abundance of wildlife. Many deer roam within the park and many species of birds, which include sightings of the American Eagle, are within its boundaries.

There is a small charge for entrance into this park, unless you are camping in one of the RV/tent sites or staying in one of its beautiful lodges or cabins.

The management of this State park has allowed us to place this cache for your pleasure in hunting. The cache is a baby soda bottle and contains a log only, so bring your own pen. It also includes a First to Find prize of a “Where’s George” dollar. Happy hunting - please replace as you found it so it will be fun for the next cachers to find.
