Geocache Description:

An easy park and grab on Westview in the rapidly developing eastern part of the city. The cache is a small camo LnL container with log, pencil, pencil sharpener and a few small trade items. Please ensure the cache is properly closed and placed back where it was found.

This is the 7th in a series of eight caches at pump stations found all over the city. These caches have been placed with the knowledge & consent of the City of Abbotsford Engineering Dept. The City of Abbotsford currently uses traditional water meters, which are read once a year. One of the problems with that system, according to the city, is that leaks can go undetected for long periods. In an effort to promote water conservation a new water monitoring system for Abbotsford homes is being installed at a cost of $4.5 million. The new system can read and transmit information to a base network, eliminating the need to send out staff to read individual meters and will allow the city to send out bills every two months instead of once a year, helping people conserve more water. Water and sewer bills have been on the increase in Abbotsford, in 2007, an average home (using 325 cubic metres of water a year) paid $208. In 2008, that amount increased to $253, and in 2009 it was hiked to $279 it is predicted the average levy would increase to $305 in 2010. Other possible benefits of the new system include charging a higher premium for water in the summer months, thereby giving consumers a financial incentive to conserving their use. The radio read meters, expected to be operational by July 2010, will allow the city to monitor water usage by the minute.
