Lostwithiel is one of Cornwall's hidden treasures, with a wealth
of history as well as shops and cafes. This is the first of two
multi-caches which will hopefully show you a few of the sights in
this 12th century stannary town.
When you find the answer to each stage, substitute the letter
representing missing co-ordinates with the answers you find.
Stage 1
Go to the listed co-ordinates (N 50° 24.519', W 4°
40.107'). Lostwithiel was a new town, founded by the
Normans for the export of tin. How many years of Lostwithiel
history are celebrated by the stone?
Answer: ABC years
Stage 2
Go to N 50° 24.(A/2)57', W 4° 39.A67',
where you will find a small South Africa Peace Memorial. It used to
be much larger, but fared badly in a collision with a lorry. In
what year was the peace memorial erected? You'll find this carved
into the stone of the memorial itself, there is also a plaque on
the memorial with the wrong date!
Answer: DEFG years
Stage 3
Lostwithiel's bridge over the river Fowey dates from the 1200s. It
has been modified many times over the years, changing with the
river. How many arches are there in total on the bridge? There
is one very small arch, much smaller than all the others, which you
shouldn't include in your answer. It's totally underwater some of
the time, so you may not be able to see it anyway. The best
place to count them is at: N 50° 24.4(D+G)4', W 4°
40.FGG' but you should also walk all the way across the
bridge to check your answer.
Answer: H arches
Stage 4
Now head north east towards Second Island Park, to N
50° 24.6(H+D)B' W 4° 40.D4(H-D)' . What year was
it Mayor John Pegg dedicated the stone?
Answer: I = first digit of the year, J =
number of zeroes in the year
Stage 5
Now take all the numbers that you have collected. If you want to
check you've got them right, A+B+C+D+E+F+G+H+I+J = 33. You'll find
the cache at:
N 50° G(H/2).(I*J)DI', W 4°
40.BH(J-I)'
