Geocache Description:

A two part multi-cache in a local park. Please read the full description.

Foley’s Fishing Pond

For my first hide, I wanted to bring people to a lovely area for more than a park and grab. Foley’s Fishing Pond is tucked away in a residential neighborhood and provides an escape from suburbia. I spent a fair amount of time here as a child and it was the first place I thought of when planning a cache of my own. The location was originally a brickyard owned by the Foley family. During excavation in 1897, an underground spring was unearthed and it filled the hole with water creating the pond you see today. The Highland Park Park District purchased the pond in 1925.

I have fond memories of catching bluegills here with my father and sister. The fishing doesn’t seem as good anymore but perhaps it is just a matter of childhood memories playing tricks on me. I did speak to a man fishing the day I initially placed the cache (I gave it some time before posting to make sure it would stay put) who had apparently caught two fish, so they are indeed still here. Bring along a rod and a few worms and give it a try when you visit if the weather obliges.

This is a two stage multicache with a micro and the final is on the large end of small. Stage one holds only coordinates.

DO NOT enter the park or attempt to find the first stage by cutting across private property. Both stages are accessible without trespassing. The entrance is on McDaniels Avenue south of Bob O’ Link. The park closes at dusk so refrain from nighttime geocaching. Private property lines both sides of the entrance so again, please do not open gates and enter yards. Careless geocachers of this sort make us all look bad.

This cache is findable in winter but beware of paths that may become icy around the pond.

Enjoy!
