In old times, the Tonda River flooded frequently, doing great damages to the villagers, fields and cattle. While the villagers were discussing to repair the dikes, legend has it, a deity appeared to Hikogoro in his dream and advised him that a human sacrifice would be effective to protect the dikes against no matter how heavy the rain was. For the villagers, he volunteered to be the human sacrifice himself. The dikes are now called Hikogoro Dikes.
