A cache near a plaque with some interesting local West Auckland
history.
Don Buck Camp was one of the most notorious gum-digging camps of
the late 1800’s and was located in this area.
Don Buck persuaded the city magistrate in town to sentence petty
thieves and drunks to “two weeks in Mt Eden jail or the same in Don
Buck’s Camp.” Other campers were those having completed sentences
who had no place to go so were transferred into Don Buck’s care.
They were given gum-digging tools, accommodation, a wage, and were
set to work.
The camp developed a reputation as a place of drunken brawls and
murder. The camp became a haven for vagrants, criminals and
discards of society.
The magistrate ordered the camp closed in 1912 “in the interests of
society.” The camp closed on Don Buck’s death in 1914.
Don Buck himself was described as fair in all his dealings. Locals
often spoke of his kindness.
The above information was taken from the plaque near GZ. The cache
is an eclipse tin covered with black tape. It contains a logbook
and pencil only. This can be a high–muggle area so stealth is
required.
