PLEASE BRING: One pre-made cache, and prizes if
you would like to donate to the raffle prize table
(IMPORTANT: See the explanations for both below,
and let me know if you are participating in the Yankee Swap)
I've never been one for planning my own birthday party, but since
this is considered a "milestone" birthday, I couldn't resist tying
it into caching. What better way to spend my birthday than with
great caching friends? Be aware of the attributes to the left.
Could be for a dangerous afternoon!!! :o)
Darn Superbowl....just HAD to plan itself on the day before my
birthday, which is when I wanted to have the event (my birthday is
actually February 8), so I chose February 6 instead. Who's playing
in the Superbowl this year anyways? Isn't it something like the
Bulls and the Yankees? JUST KIDDING! ;) This event is going to be
kind of "free-form" for lack of better word. I will have at least a
few raffle prizes, and cake (of course!), and hopefully my new (and
first ever) pathtags will make their debut!
YANKEE SWAP
Yankee Swap will happen at around 2:30 p.m. So if you'd like to
participate, be there before then. This activity is open to all
registered cachers who attend. I encourage you all to participate -
the more people who participate, the more fun this activity
is."Yankee Swap" is similar to White Elephant gift exchange, but
with a few tiny twists. Since I'm a Yankee, it's fitting to call
this"Yankee Swap".
Each person participating should bring 1 pre-made cache, ready to
be submitted online. This means one cache container, complete with
swag, logbook, and camo (if desired).
Everyone will place their cache on a table, and every participant
will draw a number from the hat. Once numbers are drawn (please
keep the numbers to yourself), everyone sits in a circle (or
something that somewhat resembles a circle) in no particular order.
I will select a number as a starting point.
For instance, I could decide that I want to start at #27, and then
go up from there. #28 would be second, #29 would be third, and so
on. When we get through the highest number, then we start at the
beginning (#1, #2, #3, etc.). This is why it is important for
everyone to keep their numbers secret - so no one thinks I'm
picking favorites. The reason for this little twist is to throw a
little unpredictability into the game. Just because someone draws a
1, doesn't mean they will start, but the numbers will still give
some order to the game. The starting person chooses a pre-made cache
off of the table.
The next person, in order, has the opportunity to steal the cache
from the person before, OR choose a new one from the table. The
third person can steal the cache from #2, or #1, but cannot steal
from anyone more than 2 before them. Or they can choose a new one
from he table. And so on. You get the idea.
Here's where YOU make the game fun! Be as creative
as you want on your pre-made cache.
You can create a themed cache where all the swag items inside
revolve around something; i.e. camping items, or items relating to
other countries. Or you could bring a cache with clever camo; i.e.
a pine cone cache, or a rock cache.
Once you create your cache, please do not share what is inside.
This will be part of the fun of the game. You don't know what type
of swag will be included. Someone could bring a plain-looking
cache, but it is filled with really interesting things, or has a
unique geocoin or travel bug inside. Just because a cache container
is small, or plain-looking, it may be filled with really cool swag
or a very hard-to-find pathtag. The possibilities are
endless!
My ONLY requests are:
- That you do NOT just bring along a lone film or pill container
with just a log in it. This defeats the purpose and doesn't offer a
fun experience for the participants of the game. Please note,
though - you can bring a film or pill container IF it is part of a
larger, unique cache, such as a film container inserted into a
drilled hole in a log or rock. This would be fine because the
"prize" for whomever ends up with that cache after the game would
be the cool cache container to hide.
- You hide the cache that you end up with from the event. The idea
of the game is that everyone who brought along a unique cache
(whether it be a cool container, or cool swag) goes home with
another cool cache to turn around and hide.
So, that's my big idea. Hope everyone participates! I think it
should be a lot of fun.
RAFFLE PRIZES
I'm also counting on having a few prizes for a raffle drawing, and
if anyone has anything they would like to add to the prize pool for
the drawing, please let me know.
The prizes can be something as simple as rolls of camo duct
tape, homemade geocaching "survival" kits, T-shirts, rechargeable
batteries and charger, additional "pre-made" caches, geocoins,
swagitems, and even non-caching related items. I am also not
opposed to having prizes that may be "gently used" such as old (but
working) GPS receivers (if someone has upgraded, etc), cool walking
sticks, etc. Again, this doesn't have to be a big production, but I
wanted to have some raffle prizes because even though it's my
birthday, I want people to have the chance to leave with something
cool.
Phew! That was a winded description. Hope I didn't over think or
over explain this. ;) Wanted to cover all my bases, though. I think
this event will be a really good way to ring in another decade of
my life.
The location of the event is where the S*W*A*G* (SouthWest
Arlington Geocachers) group meets just about every Wednesday night
from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.-ish. If you haven't joined us on a Wednesday,
please do! You don't have to live in the area, and you don't have
to come all the time. It's just a fun time to meet with friends,
trade things, discuss events, etc. Now that you know where we
meet, you have NO excuse to NOT join us!
AND ONE MORE THING: Ha. You knew there was
something else, right? Since it's my birthday I'm asking everyone
to wear my favorite color - TIE-DYE! Yes, it's a color. And I love
it. I know many of you out there own several tie-dye shirts,so now
is the time to bust them out!
