Geocache Description:

Number 2 at the Joburg Zoo for you.

At the location you are able to see the St Andrew's off Ramp sign & City / Stad on the M1 North and on the opposite side, the top of the memorial at the war museum (see attached photos)

We were very surprised to only find one cache at the zoo (G6 is outside the zoo grounds and no longer accessible from the zoo) during a recent visit.

Attributes show wheelchair access, but please note there is access in the zoo but you will not be able to grab this one in a wheelchair.

From a small public park that opened in 1904 with an odd mix of animals - including a male lion, a female leopard and a male baboon - the Johannesburg Zoo has grown to become the most popular public venues in the city. It is now a sprawling 54 hectares in central Parktown, with plenty of trees, water features and beautiful walks.

The stars of the show are, of course, the animals and the collection is impressive. There are lions, tigers, elephants, gorillas, chimpanzees, sable antelope, bat-eared foxes and polar bears among the 2 070 animals, representing 365 different species.

While its core business is the accommodation, enrichment, husbandry and medical care of wild animals, the Johannesburg Zoo also offers a variety of educational and entertainment programmes.

The cache has been placed at a spot which could become very busy with muggles so please ensure necessary caching stealth when attempting to retrieve and replace. It is a small container containing a log sheet, pencil and very small trade items.

You will find the cache snuggly hidden close to the entrance of a specific animal enclosure which is home to animals which the Johannesburg Zoo has successfully bred; these animals are the largest of their kind in the world. "Twist" the male, weighs 320 kg, and is the father of all of these animals found in South Africa.

The enclosure on the opposite side is of an animal which is a large even-toed ungulate native to the steppes of north eastern Asia. It is one of two surviving species. These have 2 and the others don’t......... Nearly all of the estimated 1.4 million of these animals alive today are domesticated. In October 2002, the estimated 950 remaining in the wild in northwest China and Mongolia were classified as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Entrance fees payable at the zoo currently are as follows:

Adults R41.00
Children R23.00
Pensioners R23.00
School Groups R17.00
Parking inside the zoo grounds is an additional R20.00

Enjoy the cache, please ensure stealth to ensure the cache is not compromised.
