Geocache Description:

This is part of a series of 24 caches which are placed on a circular walk around The Creetings via footpaths, country lanes and the remnants of ancient Suffolk green lanes which were formerly used as highways, but are now footpaths. The final cache #24 is a bonus with the co-ordinates available in the series numbers #22 and #23.

#11 Low Lane (High Summer)

Near Low Lane you can visit the three Creeting St. Mary Church Micros,
GC1WN7H, GC1WNAG, and GC1WNBR.

There are few dwellings and this narrow lane runs in a dip between banks and ditches, the fields rising on one side and a boggy fen area on the other, the site of ‘Osier Beds’.

‘Osier’ is term covering a number of species of willow which are coppiced in one form or another. Terminology, and the species involved varies both regionally and according to the purpose for which they are grown. Traditionally every lowland village and hamlet had its osiers for basketwork, eel traps, thatching spars, firewood, fencing and many other uses. East Anglia was a centre of well-developed local industries based on basket willow and other specialised uses. After declining for many years, there is now a revival of interest in osier production.
