Never Let Me Down Again is Depeche Mode's nineteenth single. It was released on 1987-08-24, after Strangelove and before the album Music for the Masses. The song was written by Martin Gore.
The lyrics describe a geocaching team from the point of view of one of the members. It's all pretty transparent, but I'll walk you through it nonetheless.
I'm taking a ride |
A geocaching trip. |
With my best friend |
A geocaching friend. |
I hope he never lets me down again |
Obviously an important geocaching friend. |
He knows where he's taking me |
It seems the friend is the one solving the mysteries. |
Taking me where I want to be |
To a cache. Where else? |
I'm taking a ride |
Yes, we know. |
With my best friend |
We're flying high |
This must be a climbing cache. |
We're watching the world pass us by |
Never want to come down |
And a good climbing cache at that. |
Never want to put my feet back down |
Well, you'd have to if you want to find other caches, but it's understandable to want to stay for a little longer if the location is that good. |
On the ground |
I'm taking a ride |
A good, mystery solving, caching friend is valuable. |
With my best friend |
I hope he never lets me down again |
Promises me I'm as safe as houses |
It's nice that the friend seems to agree that they're friends forever. |
As long as I remember who's wearing the trousers |
Oops. Better remember to mention in the log who did the mystery solving. |
I hope he never lets me down again |
One can only hope. And give credit where credit's due. |
Never let me down |
See the stars, they're shining bright |
Night caching can be fun. |
Everything's alright tonight |
It seems they found the cache. All's well that ends well. |
If your caching instincts don't let you down, you should not have any trouble finding this cache. If they do, I hope they never let you down again.
