I hate driving through here. Of course, that's what the
residents of Huntwick want. When this subdivision first went in, it
provided a new short-cut between the area of Lucas that used the be
the town of Winningkoff and Country Club Road. Create a short-cut
and people will us it, and that is exactly what happened to
Huntwick. The residents didn't like the traffic, and in particular
didn't like people speeding through the neighborhood. Never mind
that there are stop signs at every intersection on the roads that
wind through here (approx 0.2 mile apart), the residents of these
expensive homes demanded more from the fine City of Lucas. They
wanted humps!
At the time this was going on, I was trying to be a good citizen
and participate in local city council meetings, discussing issues
relevant to my neighbors and I and expressing my opinion when I
felt necessary. As those who know me are well aware, I have an
opinion or two! At this particular council meeting, the fine
residents of Huntwick were making their case for speed humps. One
couple cited the value of their property and how through traffic
and speeders were decreasing their property values. Another couple
stood up and complained that it wasn't safe for them to let their
children play in the streets! I finally had enough and decided to
open my big mouth. I explained to these city slickers that moving
to the country was not an excuse for leaving common sense at the
"Welcome to Lucas" sign - that people speed down my street as well,
and many other streets in Lucas. That other properties are just as
expensive as theirs and have the same traffic issues. Basically,
that they were no more special than any other resident of Lucas.
Oh, and what I thought was the clincher - that the rest of us
residents use an age-old, tried and true method for keeping our
children safe from traffic - we don't let them play in the
streets!
The Fire Department actually spoke up against the humps,
indicating that they would slow response times in the event of a
fire or medical emergency.
One council member suggested that they increase police officer
patrols in the area to dissuade speeders. Once resident rebutted
that they didn't want increased police presence at is might result
in THE RESIDENTS getting speeding tickets!
In the end, the council voted to put in speed humps. Shortly
thereafter, I decided I had neither the intestinal fortitude nor
the patience for small town politics and stopped going to city
council meetings.....
You are looking for a waterproof match container in natural
camouflage. It is a log-only cache, so BYOP. I have two requests,
er, demands for those of you who seek this cache:
- There are two blind curves that make an “S” turn on
Winningkoff Road , and the cache is near one of them. PLEASE DO NOT
PARK ON WINNINGKOFF ROAD. If you do, you are likely to hear bad
metal-on-metal crunching sounds as one of my neighbors plows into
your car.
- In respect for the residents, PLEASE DO NOT HUNT FOR THIS CACHE
AT NIGHT. While the cache is hidden in a right-of-way area, there
are houses nearby. Most Lucas residents know each other, or can at
least notice when strangers are in the area. A geocacher hunting in
this area at night might meet with local resistance with extreme
prejudice (if you know what I mean. Buckshot injections are NOT
conducive to good health!). If I somehow discover that you found
this cache at night, I will delete your log. Period.
