The landscape is determined by the
Hoarusib river as a green ribbon with a wide sandy winds through
the area. North of the river are primarily flat rocks ('koppies' in
Afrikaans), the landscape drawing. The desert elephants are
completely dependent of water from this river. They can be
aggressive so do not disturb them or drive trough. There are also
desert lions, but they are very hard to find.
Few people are living in the area,
because it is almost always dry and hot. Only the Himba have a
settlement here and there. The Himba let their cows roam freely
under the supervision of a shepherd. And cow dung;) So where is cow
dung, are likely Himba. Unfortunately we have seen Himba begging
but rather do nothing. Because then you encourage begging. If it
could, we asked them to do something first, such as wood for the
fire in the night. This lets your people in their value and
don’t make them annoying beggars.
Purros is best known for its beautiful location, the original
village and the camp site run by the community and a simple
self-catering lodge. Here you will find a campsite with space,
silence, you see the stars at night and the galaxy so beautiful,
your shower under a tree and the birds are your alarm. And it often
happens that evening or morning the elephants walks trough the dry
river, so you can see them well. Nearby is Okahirongo Elephant
Lodge (at a much higher price!) Together with the community they
work on a project which aims to preserve the desert lions.
In Orupembe there is a very very small shop and mostly you can
buy some petrol. But be sure, take enough petrol in big
jerrycans, because your car needs a lot! Take also enough
water and food, there is nothing to buy. Be prepared! You have a
gps, that's necessary in this region. But also very nice if you
have the maps of Tracks4Africa.
The cache is located a few kilometers from the main road, and you
will be rewarded with a fantastic view over the Hoarusib. You can
reach the cache with the 4x4car! The cache is under a certain
stone, for a Geocacher easy to recognize.
