Although the trail to Gorilla Hill is a fairly easy hike from
the Cienega Springs picnic area, Gorilla Hill itself is aptly named
because sometimes you need hands and feet to ascend.
In winter, park at the Sulfur Springs picnic area and hike south
and then west along the paved road that leads to the Cienega
Springs picnic area (about 1.1 miles from the Sulfur Springs picnic
area). In summer you can drive to the Cienega Springs picnic area.
From the Cienega Springs picnic area, proceed west up the Cienega
Trail. In about a half mile you will cross the Faulty Trail and
enter the Sandia Wilderness. Continue up the Cienega Trail for
about 0.3 miles. At this point the trail becomes pretty steep --
you have arrived at Gorilla Hill!
Look for a green ammo can.
