What Lies Beneath: Northenden Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

RedFerret: Well, I'm afraid it's gone - and judging by the area around GZ it won't be coming back [:(] as the hiding place (Hidden in a custom micro at the end of an old railing that disappeared into the ground towards the old tunnel if you DNF'd it) and cover (Monster nettles) have been removed, and the whole area filled in (If you want a challenge, try and find the cache NOW! - if its not gone it's buried under several tonnes of earth).

However, when I was surveying the scene I was approached by a very nice man in a suit who identified himself as a council worker - apparently the area will be re-landscaped and (hopefully) absorbed into the park as a green buffer from the road, so if a cache has to go, then I reckon it can't be for a much better reason [:D]

A big thanks to everyone who looked for this cache, and the other two in the series. All archived now.

Geocache Description:

A series of 3 caches near recent urban underground.
The other two caches are What Lies Beneath: Sharston (Archived) and What Lies Beneath: Roundwood (Archived).

This cache is near to the 'Airport Hotel', formerly the ‘Post House Hotel’, which stands high above the junction of Palatine Road and Princess Parkway

For some-time between the 1950's and the 1980's, this junction was crossed by a warren of subways/underpasses, which allowed pedestrians to pass beneath the busy traffic unheeded. These may have been pleasant when first built, but if A Clockwork Orange has taught us anything, it's not to trust a concrete subway.

The tunnels have now been bricked up, and the access paths buried in some cases, which does lead to the odd scene here, where the old railings can still be seen diving into the ground.

This area was also briefly famous in 1979, when someone managed to drive a double-decker bus into one of the subway approaches after colliding with a fire engine.

Stealth may be rquired when searching for the cache, as this spot does get busy. Please bring your own pen.
