L’histoire la plus lointaine de l’église St Martin de Marignac Laspeyres remonte au 12ème siècle, date à laquelle elle est donnée par des frères de St Elix Seglan aux Hospitaliers de St Jean de Jerusalem. Ils fondent dans les dépendances de l’église une sauveté* entre 1100 et 1120 dont l’évêque Bertrand, qui deviendra St Bertrand de Comminges, est garant de l’acte de fondation.
En 1978, année du Patrimoine, elle est restaurée complètement et inaugurée le 6 juillet 1980. Le préau abrite le porche gothique dont l’arche repose sur deux chapiteaux en cul de lampe. L’un avec un lion, l’autre avec un angelot.
La croix dans le mur de gauche date de 1576. Elle est vraisemblablement une pierre de remploi et devait se trouver soit à un carrefour, soit sur un monument funéraire.
Le linteau de porte posé à droite où sont inscrits « IHS Maria-Joseph » et « Jean Pons » date du 18ème siècle. La famille Pons fut la première « fayancerie » à Marignac Laspeyres (1741). Quant à IHS, ce sont les initiales de In Hoc Signo, ou « par ce signe tu vaincras », ce trigramme est celui du Christ.
* Au Moyen Âge, une sauveté était une zone de refuge délimitée autour d'une église par plusieurs bornes. À l'intérieur de ce périmètre, il était interdit de poursuivre les fugitifs.

As far as we can trace it in time, the history of St Martin’s church in Marignac Laspeyres dates back to the 12th century, when it was given by brothers of St Elix Séglan to Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem. They founded a sauveté* in the outbuildings of the church between 1100 and 1120, whose foundation deed had Bishop Bertrand, who became St. Bertrand de Comminges, as a guarantor.
In 1978, Heritage Year, it was completely restored and opened on July 6, 1980.
The courtyard houses the Gothic porch where the arch rests on two capitals with cantilevered consoles. One with a lion, the other one with a cherub.
The cross in the left wall dates from 1576. It is probably a reused stone and should have either been in an intersection or on a tombstone.
The door lintel placed on the right where "IHS Maria-Joseph" and "Jean Pons" can be read dates from the 18th century. The Pons family owned the first "fayancerie" in Marignac Laspeyres (1741).
As for IHS, they are the initials of In Hoc Signo or "by this sign you will conquer", this is the trigram of Christ.
* In the Middle Ages, a “sauveté” was a refuge area delineated around a church by several boundary stones. Within this area, it was forbidden to pursue fugitives.
