Geocache Description:

This is the second Help for Hero's cache that has been placed to commemorate British Men and Women who have fallen in conflicts in the line of their duty.

The Heugh (pronounced "Yuff") Gun Battery is a site of great significance. As a surviving 19th century coastal battery, complete with WW1 and WW2 modifications, it stands as a memorial to those lost during the great war.
The battery was the location of the only shore-to-ship combat in the whole of the UK during the Great War and home to the first person to die on British shores. It is a place that should stimulate the hearts as well as the minds of all who visit.
Coastal artillery is the branch of armed forces concerned with operating anti-ship artillery or fixed gun batteries in coastal fortifications.

It has been held as a general rule of thumb, that one shore-based gun equalled three naval guns of the same caliber, due to the steadiness of the coastal gun which allowed for significantly higher accuracy than their sea-mounted counterparts. Land-based guns also benefited in most cases from the protection of walls or earth mounds which gave the guns a measure of protection unseen in naval vessels before the advent of armour in the 19th century.

Royal Artillery guns and launchers are thier colours. On parade, the Royal Horse Artillery takes precedence over every other regiment and corps in the Regular British Army; placed at the right of the line.
The Royal Artillery has been present at every campaign in which the British Army has fought. They have one battle honour, Ubique ("Everywhere"), granted by William IV in 1833. Its subsidiary motto is Quo Fas et Gloria Ducunt ("Where Right and Glory Lead").

We regulary check our caches, so could anyone who is visiting this cache please place it back in the same location as you found it or report any probs, thanks
