On the "White path between Marske by the Sea and Saltburn by the
Sea
Marske means place in the marsh, probably from the Scandinavian
word mersc. Marske is mentioned in the Domesday book as Mersche in
1086. At the time of the domesday book Marske was larger than
Redcar and Redcar fishermen paid tax to the Lord of the Manor of
Marske. Windy Hill is well named and anyone who visits the cache
will find even on a summers day the "sea breeze" will still blow
off the sea. The path is a bridleway running alongside the Marske
to Saltburn line which is an extension of the original Stockton to
Darlington Railway.
