Geocache Description:

Cache reloacted and ready to be found again!

This cache is part of my ‘Remember……?’ series. I grew up in this area and decided to hide caches at places that were special to me back in the day. All of the places are closed, gone, or rebuilt into something different. If you’ve been in this area since the mid-80s or so, you’ll probably remember these places. If you’re new to the area, then here’s some historical information for you! I’ve researched the history of the establishment that was at the location as best as possible, but since most of these places have been closed since before the internet was prominent; sometimes the information is tough to gather.

Anyway, hope you enjoy this cache and this series. If you remember any of the places in this series, please let us all know in your log. Thanks for searching for my caches!

Richway Department Stores were the discount version of Rich’s Department Stores. Richway open in 1968 in Metro Atlanta with this location and locations in Tucker and College Park. The stores had the triangular-wedge shaped skylights that can still be seen on the roof of this building. They have been hidden from view inside the Target store that currently occupies this building. Richway stores were large stores for their time.

The Richway chain spread throughout the 70s and 80s and expanded to neighboring states. Rich’s was sold to Federated Department Stores in the late 70s; in 1986, Federated merged Richway with their Gold Circle stores, retaining the Richway name. But when Federated begin experiencing financial difficulties they sold Richway to Kimco, which in turn sold many of the stores to Dayton-Hudson Corp (now Target).

This location is the only former Richway location that is still operating as Target. The building has been renovated twice since opening as Target: once in the 90s and again in 2005. All the rest have been resold/relocated (the Sandy Springs Target was moved in October 2008, but the old building still has the Richway triangular-wedge skylights visible from the outside).

Owl1959 provided me with some further information: "There is a little more to the history of this particular Richway store. In 1968 when this store opened, traffic in the area was considerably different. Around this time, Interstate 75 was still under construction north of Atlanta and, at that time, terminated in Fulton County where it merged with US 41 near West Paces Ferry and all traffic to the north flowed on 41. A little later, a segment of I-75 was opened northward and terminated at Roswell Rd (SR 120) where traffic was diverted to US 41 at the "big chicken".

From 1961 until 1972, I commuted from Atlanta to Marietta daily using US-41/I-75. As I recall, traffic in the area was busy but the first traffic light north of Fulton county on US-41 was at Windy Hill Rd. There were very few commercial establishments along the route. My recall is that there was a small apartment complex on the east side of the US-41 at the location of the current of Target during 1968. I had shopped at the Richway during the 1968-1972 period but my recollection is that the store was located on US-41between Windy Hill Rd and Terrell Mill Rd in the still existing large store building on that site." Thank you, Owl1959, for the information.

BYOP - this is a micro and no room for pens or tradeables. I'd advise against hunting this one after dark. The hide isn't too difficult, but the area could be questionable after dark. I don't recommend parking on Target property - security called the police on a cacher the day this was originally published, so I relocated it. Coords averaged; should be accurate to about 10 feet.

!!!CONGRATS TO AXMANTIS - FTF!!!
