Geocache Description:

Part of my 'Remember......' series at one of my all-time favorite restaurants!

This cache is part of my ‘Remember……?’ series. I grew up in this area and decided to place caches at places that were special to me back in the day. All of the places are closed, gone, or rebuilt into something different. If you’ve been in this area since the mid-80s or so, you’ll probably remember these places. If you’re new to the area, then here’s some historical information for you! I’ve researched the history of the establishment that was at the location as best as possible, but since most of these places have been closed since before the internet was prominent; sometimes the information is tough to gather.

Anyway, hope you enjoy this cache and this series. If you remember any of the places in this series, please let us all know in your log. Thanks for searching for my caches!

Rio Bravo was a Mexican 'Tex-Mex' style restaurant/cantina that opened its first location in Buckhead in 1985. Several other locations soon opened across the southeast and Michigan. Rio Bravo was created by Ray Shoenbaum and International Restaurant Concepts (IRC). Ray's father opened the Shoney's chain and Ray opened the 'Ray's' restaurants...with the most popular being 'Ray's on the River'. Rio Bravo was sold to Chevy's Fresh Tex in 1999. By 2002, Chevy's had closed or converted all Rio Bravo locations. The two best items I remember are the salsa (which was made in-house) and the tortillas, which they also made in-house on a large machine in customer view.

The three Rio Bravo locations I typically visited the were in Marietta, Kennesaw and Buckhead. I also ate at the Nashville location a few times. I ate at this location the most, as it was across the interstate from my former office.

AND....we may not have to 'Remember' Rio Bravo forever, as Ray confirmed he's trying to bring the restaurant back!! The last I heard was around April 2012, so the idea may or may not happen. I guess we'll wait and see. Regardless, there probably won't be a location here anymore. At least we have the memories!
