This cache is placed near the Victoria Beach Golf Course, just off Sam McMorris Lane. The golf course is a well-maintained 9-hole public course.
Dr. L. Sam McMorris passed away on December 2, 2006. He served the Rural Municipality of Victoria Beach as a member of council from 1970-1998, including 18 years as Reeve.
Dr. McMorris contributed much time and effort to the Victoria Beach community, and he had a special place in his heart for the golf course. His tireless efforts were rewarded with the only Life Membership to the V.B.G.C. ever awarded by council, following his retirement in 1998. On March 29 2009, council officially named this road leading to the golf course the Sam McMorris Lane.
In 1920, residents got together and started clearing underbrush from part of the present golf course location. The golf course itself was designed and completed under the direction of Reeve Frank Sprague in 1923. It started off with simply three holes. Eventually it became a par 28 nine-hole course over the years. And in 1989, it was expanded to its current format (par 35). In that year, Dr. McMorris laid out the new 5th fairway and Jim Chapel cleared the land.
This area of Victoria Beach dates back to the earliest days of recorded history for V.B. In the 1890's, Captain John Thomas, sailing in a steamer from Selkirk arrived at Victoria Beach (then known as Little Elk Island). He was supplying wood for a Selkrik sawmill and supposedly cut 800 cords of pine and birch from the area that later became the golf course.
The golf course hosts four summer tournaments per year: The Mens Open, Ladies Open, Juniors, and 55 Plus.
Golf course rates in 2020 are $15.00 weekdays (9 holes), or $17.00 weekends. Children can golf for $7.00/round. An adult membership (full season) is $345.00.
In 2009, family, friends and colleagues of Dr. McMorris established the Dr. Sam McMorris Memorial Fund with the Manitoba Medical College Foundation. The fund was established to support the Dr. Sam McMorris Awards, presented to the Resident in the University of Manitoba Pathology Residency Program who is judged by the Department to have completed the best research or clinical study in a given year. The most popular day beach is Clubhouse Beach (N 50° 41.925 W 096° 33.687). There is no campground at Victoria Beach.
In the summer months, you'll find public washrooms at N 50° 42.055 W096° 33.555 (Village Green), or N 50° 41.919 W096° 33.646 (near the Clubhouse).
Parking note: During the months of July and August, vehicle traffic is restricted at Victoria Beach. If you arrive between the last week of June and Labour Day (first weekend in September), you must park your car in the parking lot (N 50° 42.135 W 096° 33.191) and walk from there. Parking will cost you $8.00 for the day (in 2020). So bring your bike. Alternatively, bring you family and beach gear and make a day of it. Note: During the other 10 months of the year, your vehicle is welcome to travel with you throughout the community. Note: If you indicate to the parking lot attendant that you are just going to find a geocache near the Bakery, they will only charge you $3.00. (If they've never heard of geocaching, mention you are just going to the Bakery).
