Geocache Description:

First State Challenge 2010- Hartly - hidden by R.L.Shehorn

Delaware Geocachers logo

The Delaware Challenge is back: First State Challenge 2010 sponsored by Delaware Geocachers! There are 22 new caches spread across the state of Delaware by volunteer cachers to give you an appreciation for the great areas of the First State. We are spotlighting New Castle County this year. These should all be fairly easy to find as they are either small or regular size with a maximum rating of 2/2. To complete this challenge and be eligible for a Pathtag & certificate at the challenge event, you must complete the following:

1. You must find and log ALL 22 caches- both at the cache location and online. Record the code phrase written in the log book of each hide and email your completed list of all 22 code phrases to FirstStateChallenge@gmail.com.
2. For your convenience, there is a form on the Delaware Geocaching Website at
First State Challenge 2010 - Form although the use of this form is not required.
3. There will be a Challenge Event (more details later) open to all cachers. At this event, those that have been verified as completing the challenge, will be eligible for the following:
       Completion certificate
       Challenge Pathtag (limited)
4. Pathtags are limited to the first 100 cachers who complete the challenge.
5. More information can be found on the Delaware Geocachers Forum at First State Challenge 2010

Hartly

Location

The town has not always been called Hartly. Through the years it has been called such names as Proctor's Outlet, Watery Plains, Cornel's Quarters, Strawberry Market and Butter Pot. The 1868 Beer's Atlas shows Hartly with the name of Aurthursville. In 1883, there was a hotel that housed 25 guests.

Durng the 20's and 30's when the town was called Strawberry Market, there was a cannery here. This along with a train in the center of town made this an ideal spot for shipping fruit throughout the east coast. Hartly has been home to garages, grocery stores, bars, churches and a school. The economic changes have left their marks on this tiny hamlet.

Cache Details

The cache is hidden at one of the few remaining buildings "from the old days." It was a grocery store and in the 50's was the West Dover Candy Company. This company sent candy and cigarettes to the entire east coast.

This cache is an Ammo Box placed with the permission of the property owner, who asks that you be kind and courteous of the property and only go after this cache during daylight hours.

If you aren't in too much of hurry to grab the next cache, step in and thank Dave Brown, who so generously gave his permission for this hide. Maybe we'll infect him with our caching bug and he can share some more tales and local history with you.

ATTENTION CACHERS- absolutely NO NIGHT CACHING on this hide. Please do not violate the property owner's wishes!!
