You will be seeking this cache near the remains of the former estate of John Ringling. One of many estates located in the Palisades, it has very little remaining, not much more the bits of foundation. The remains can be a bit unstable so watch your footing. The cache is a large round tupperwear container with screwtop lid. It has been moved for a variety of reasons, about 150 feet from it's original spot. The old location was an even find but a bear to physically remove from it's spot and it ended up breaking the cache container. The new location is a much harder spot to get to, and a much harder spot to locate as well. Parking is at N40 57.212 W73 55.238 which is where the Palisades Interstate Park Commission is located. In their lobby you can pick up maps of the Palisades, which is probably a good idea. The signs says parking only for official business, but as long as you park near the trail entrance you won't encounter any problems.

You can take one of two trails. The white trail runs along the Palisades for 8/10ths of a mile. Alternately you can also take the green trail from the parking lot. This trail runs along the Palisades for a short distance then brings you further into the woods and runs along the cliffs.

For those who are unfamiliar with the NJ Palisades it is over 14 miles of cliffs that overlook the Hudson river, running from the GWB into NY state. It has many miles of trails and it is absolutely beautiful, especially now as we head into the fall season. There are several boat basins where people can picnic. The trails are a great place to go and lose yourself for a few hours and walk your dog.

This cache is the home of Harold the Bear. He is a hitchhiker whose goal is to visit most of the USA. Click to see Harold & follow his travels.

WARNING! WARNING! DANGER WILL ROBINSON! The route to where the cache has been moved to takes you very VERY close to the edge of the cliffs. Do NOT bring a dog or a child under age 10 unless you've got someone to stay back with them or you cna chain them to a tree (the dog, not the kid) Also the immediate area where the cache has difficult & unstable terrain. I do not under any circumstances advise looking for this cache if it has rained in the last 48 hrs or if there is any snow on the ground.
