Geocache Description:

Mt. Tsukuba (Tsukubasan) has been worshipped as a Shinto god since ancient times. In the era of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Tsukubasan Shrine was designated the important shrine to protect the demon's gate of Edo (present-day Tokyo), the direction of northeast which had been believed as the direction bad power comes from. Successive Tokugawa Shoguns had adored the shrine.

Tsukubamichi, the old main approach to the Tsukubasan Shrine was developed in the time of the third Shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu.

The area where the cache is placed is called Kangori. In Kangori area, many old traditional Japanese style houses remain. At the cache point, there is a magnificent storehouse made from stones. In many areas in Japan, it is common that storehouses are made from wattle-and-daub. Stone storehouse is one of a characteristic of south Ibaraki area. The stone storehouse was reformed to a glass atelier. There is another art gallery which was reformed from an old shop in this area. Local people are now trying to promote their traditional settlement with collaboration with modern artists.

Enjoy surprising marriage of tradition and modern art.
