Geocache Description:

Decon Contaner. Tread softly here, and be respectful not to disturb the sleep of those who slumber nearby.

Now, a ghost town, marked only by the Estacado Baptist Church (founded 1889), the town of Estacado was one of the first settlements on the Plains of West Texas. Founded in 1879 by a colony of Quakers led by Paris Cox, the Estacado Community was the first Anglo settlement in the area, and was once the capital of a 9,000 square mile region of unorganized counties. A two-story courthouse was built in Estacado, near the Lubbock-Crosby County line for the newly formed Crosby County, but, when surveyed, the courthouse was determined actually to lie in Lubbock County. It was moved to Old Emma, to the Southeast, and then later to Crosbyton. This cemetery holds the history of this frontier town, including the grave of its founder, Paris Cox (d. 1888) and the grave of his daughter, Mary Ellen Cox, who died from a rattlesnake bite. This community also held the first school in the area, a dugout classroom started in 1882, and the first college, started in 1890.
