Geocache Description:

This is a tribute to a fellow cacher that could have been done long ago. There may be a number in the name of this cache, but really this is for all the adventure, puzzles and fun we've all had searching for his always challenging caches. It wouldn't be a fitting tribute to Steve unless this cache had a puzzle to solve and a nice stroll in the woods. So, without further ado, and congratulations from us, LEGS and every cacher who has fond(?) memories of your puzzles, here it is.

The stage 1 coordinates are:

N41° 48.ABC

W087° 48.XYZ

A = the number of years after acquisition by FPDCC that it became a National Historic Site.

B = the number of times the word Chicago appears on the center segment of the sign.

C = add together the individual digits of the first year Marquette had a cabin, then subtract 10.

X = the total number of fords multiplied by the total number of letters in the names of the fords (excluding the word "ford" itself), divided by the sum of the number of unique street names along the bottom of the sign minus one.

Y = multiply first two digits of the year the Portage became a National Historic Site by second two digits of the year the Portage became a NHS, subtract 1000, then add 12.

Z = multiply the first digit of the year in which the FPDCC acquired the property by the second digit, then by the third digit, and then by the fourth (and final) digit.

Once you complete all these calculations, you will know where the coordinates to the final are posted. Use of the blacktop trail to the north of you is encouraged. Remember, this was hidden by liminal man :). You can blame CMWC for the puzzle.
