IYC2011 - Calcium Traditional Geocache

While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for the cache owner and block other cachers from placing a cache in the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time, we can’t do so forever.

Nothing seems to happen with this cache listing, so it is now archived, so that someone else can place a cache in the area, and geocachers can once again enjoy visiting this location. Also, if it hasn’t been done already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

(This reviewer note is in English so non-Norwegian cache owners, geocachers and cache reviewers can understand what it says.)

Geocache Description:

This is a cache in the IYC2011-series that is preparing for the
International Year of Chemistry in 2011. They will hopefully
increase chemistry knowledge as well as provide for good cache
experiences.

Each cache in the IYC2011-series contains a clue (on the log
sheet) to find the final IYC2011-cache to be released on
1/1/2011.

Calcium



Calcium is the chemical element with atomic number 20, represented by the symbol Ca.

Calcium is a soft gray alkaline earth metal, and is the fifth most abundant element by mass in the Earth's crust. Calcium is also the fifth most abundant dissolved ion in seawater by both molarity and mass, after sodium, chloride, magnesium, and sulfate.
Calcium is essential for living organisms, particularly in cell physiology, where movement of the calcium ion Ca2+ into and out of the cytoplasm functions as a signal for many cellular processes. As a major material used in mineralization of bones and shells, calcium is the most abundant metal by mass in many animals.



Calcium carbide is a chemical compound with the chemical formula of CaC2. The material is colorless, but most samples have a color ranging from black to grayish-white, depending on the grade. Its main use industrially is in the production of acetylene and calcium cyanamide.
Calcium carbide is produced industrially in an electric arc furnace from a mixture of lime and coke at approximately 2000 °C. This method has not changed since its invention in 1888

CaO + 3 C → CaC2 + CO

The reaction of calcium carbide with water was discovered by Friedrich Wöhler in 1862.

CaC2 + 2 H2O → C2H2 + Ca(OH)2

This reaction is the basis of the industrial manufacture of acetylene, and is the major industrial use of calcium carbide.



Calcium carbide was until 2002 produced at Odda Smelteverk AS, close to the cache position.
