Geocache Description:

This cache will take you to the remains of two windmills to the west of the village of Wakeham on Portland. The stone towers remain and are in reasonable condition but have long since lost their ‘workings’.

The windmills are in an interesting area, with active quarrying taking place close by. Please take care with young children and dogs. There is some great history on the two windmills which I recommend reading at Geoff Kirby's website Exploring Portland.

It is easy to associate Portland solely with stone quarrying and prisons but these windmills show there is more to the island than you might initially think. There are some other interesting caches close by called “A Pirates Treasure” GC1DBDV and “Rufus Castle” GC17QPJ which can easily be combined.

The cache site is accessed from the recommended parking area by public footpath. Take the path leaving the back of the car park following the steps up the bank. One of the two towers can be seen in the distance in a NW direction from the top of the bank. The public footpath proceeds along the side of the quarry road, before breaking away towards the tower. The cache contains a logbook, pencil and the usual swaps. Boots recommended if its been wet.
